Your first six cards, then the kitty you pick up after calling spades.

The decision

Hearts is where the numbers lean, and it loses 86 to 96. Diamonds loses 86 to 116. Clubs wins 93 to 89, which is barely a win.

Spades is the best call, and you hold more of it than it first appears. The King and 8 become the King, Ace, 9 and 8 once the kitty arrives, and your Partner holds the Jack and 10. The suit wins 121 to 61.

The line that wins

The hard AI, playing all four seats with the cards face up, won six of nine tricks with spades as trump.

Trick 4: Partner's Jack takes 34

Your Partner leads the Jack of spades. You add the 9 and neither opponent can touch it. The trick is worth 34 points.

Trick 8: the Ace cuts a Jack

Your Partner leads the Jack of hearts. Opponent 2 follows with the 10, and you cut with the Ace of spades for 23.

Trick 9: the last trick

You lead the King of spades. Your Partner puts the 10 on it and takes the last trick, 29 points with the bonus.

Nine tricks with spades as trump. You win tricks 6 and 8; your Partner wins tricks 3, 4, 7 and 9; Opponent 1 wins tricks 1 and 5; Opponent 2 wins trick 2.
Every trick in order. A gold outline marks the winner.

The takeaway

When no suit shouts, count the kitty. Two spades came with it, and they turned a decent suit into a dominant one. Read when to call trump.
