Your six cards are the 7 and 8 of hearts, the 6 of diamonds, the 8 and 10 of clubs and the 6 of spades. The kitty is the 10 of hearts, the ace of diamonds and the 9 of spades. Trump is clubs.
Your first six cards, then the kitty you pick up after calling clubs.

The decision

Hearts is the call that looks natural, with the 8, 7 and 10, and it loses 43 to 139. Opponent 2 holds the Ace, King and Jack. Diamonds loses 56 to 126.

Clubs wins 127 to 55. You hold only the 10 and 8, but your Partner holds the Jack, Queen, 9, and picks up the Ace and a 6 from the kitty. Spades wins as well, 109 to 73, so there is a second route if you prefer it.

The line that wins

The hard AI, playing all four seats with the cards face up, lost tricks one and two and won the other seven with clubs as trump.

Tricks 1 and 2: Opponent 2's Ace

The Ace of hearts takes 14, then the Ace of spades takes 21. The opponents bank 35 and have nothing left that wins.

Trick 4: Partner's Jack

Your Partner leads the Jack of clubs and you add the 10. The trick is worth 30.

Trick 9: Partner finishes

Your Partner leads the Queen of clubs for the last trick, 31 points with the bonus.

Nine tricks with clubs as trump. your Partner wins tricks 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9; Opponent 2 wins tricks 1 and 2.
Every trick in order. A gold outline marks the winner.

The takeaway

Losing early does not mean you chose wrong. The opponents' Aces are one-time trick winners, and once they are spent, a trump suit with the Jack, the Nine and the Ace has nothing left to fear. Count what the other side can win more than once, not what it can win first. Read why the Jack beats everything.

Think you can beat it?
