Nothing Looks Good, and Diamonds on a Lone Nine Wins by 72

Your hand has a 10 of hearts, a 9 of diamonds, and not much else. The call that wins is the one where your single card is the Nine.

The hand

Your first six cards are the 10 and 7 of hearts, the 9 of diamonds, the 7 and 6 of clubs, and the 7 of spades. The kitty is the Ace of hearts, the Ace of clubs and the Queen of spades.

Your first six cards, then the kitty you pick up after calling diamonds.

The decision

Clubs is the call that looks best on paper, with an Ace from the kitty, and it loses 70 to 92. Hearts, with the 10 and the Ace, loses 47 to 115, because Opponent 1 holds the Queen and Jack and Opponent 2 the King and Nine. Spades loses 45 to 117.

Diamonds wins 117 to 45. You hold the 9, your Partner holds the Jack, Queen, 6 and 7, and the Jack and the Nine on the same team are worth more than the Ace the opponents hold.

The line that wins

The hard AI, playing all four seats with the cards face up, won six of nine tricks with diamonds as trump.

Trick 6: the Jack takes the Ace

Your Partner leads the Jack of diamonds. Opponent 2 plays the Ace, you add the Nine and Opponent 1 the King. The trick is worth 49 points, and it decides the hand.

Trick 8: a small cut

Opponent 1 leads the Jack of spades. Your Partner cuts with the 7 of diamonds for 6 points.

Trick 9: Partner finishes

Your Partner leads the Queen of diamonds and takes the last trick, 23 points with the bonus.

Nine tricks with diamonds as trump. You win tricks 3 and 4; your Partner wins tricks 5, 6, 8 and 9; Opponent 1 wins tricks 1 and 7; Opponent 2 wins trick 2.
Every trick in order. A gold outline marks the winner.

The takeaway

You do not need a strong hand to call a strong suit. You need the Jack or the Nine, and a Partner who has the other. Here the Ace of diamonds ends up in the wrong hands and falls under the Jack. See why the Jack beats everything.

Think you can beat it?
