Daily Challenge Recap

The Jack of Spades Loses; the Ace of Hearts Wins

Both suits have a card you would be glad to hold. One has the Jack. The other has your Partner.

The hand

Your first six cards are the Ace and 8 of hearts, the 10 and 6 of diamonds, and the Jack and 8 of spades. The kitty is the Jack of diamonds, the 6 of hearts and the 7 of clubs.

Your six cards are the ace and 8 of hearts, the 10 and 6 of diamonds and the jack and 8 of spades. The kitty is the 6 of hearts, the jack of diamonds and the 7 of clubs. Trump is hearts.
Your first six cards, then the kitty you pick up after calling hearts.

The decision

Spades has the Jack, and it is the obvious call. It loses 95 to 107. Opponent 2 holds the King, Queen and 9 of spades, a Bella and the Nine of trump, and Opponent 1 holds the Ace. Diamonds and clubs lose as well.

Hearts is the Ace, 8 and 6, a weaker-looking suit. Your Partner holds the Jack, the Nine and the King of hearts, so the Ace, Jack, Nine and King are all on your side. It wins 104 to 78, with your Partner's 10, Jack and Queen of clubs as a 20 run.

The line that wins

The hard AI, playing all four seats with the cards face up, won four of nine tricks with hearts as trump.

Trick 5: Partner's Jack takes your Ace

Your Partner leads the Jack of hearts and you put the Ace on it. The trick is worth 34.

Trick 6: a small trump cuts a King

Your Partner leads the 10 of clubs and Opponent 2 puts the King on it. Your 8 of hearts cuts it and takes 14.

Trick 7: Partner cuts your 10

You lead the 10 of diamonds and your Partner cuts it with the King of hearts for 17.

Nine tricks with hearts as trump. You win trick 6; your Partner wins tricks 4, 5 and 7; Opponent 1 wins tricks 1, 2, 8 and 9; Opponent 2 wins trick 3.
Every trick in order. A gold outline marks the winner.

The takeaway

A Jack in your hand is worth less than a Jack and a Nine in your Partner's. For the order of the trumps, read why the Jack beats everything.
