Your Ace and King, Their Jack: A 104-58 Spade Call

You have the Ace and King of spades. Your Partner has the Jack. Put those together and you have a strong suit that nobody at the table can see.

The hand

Your first six cards are the 9 of hearts, the 7 of diamonds, the 10 of clubs, and the Ace, King and 7 of spades. Spades is the call. The Ace and King are your strength, and the kitty adds the King of clubs, the King of diamonds and the Queen of hearts.

Your six cards are the 9 of hearts, the 7 of diamonds, the 10 of clubs and the ace, king and 7 of spades. The kitty is the queen of hearts, the king of diamonds and the king of clubs. Trump is spades.
Your first six cards, then the kitty you pick up after calling spades.

None of the kitty cards are trumps, so you still have three spades. What you do not know is that your Partner holds the Jack of spades.

The line that wins

The hard AI, playing all four seats with the cards face up, won five of nine tricks and finished 104 to 58.

Trick 3: Ace under the Jack

Your Partner leads the Jack of spades. You play the Ace on it and the 10 of spades lands there too. The trick is worth 41 points, the biggest of the hand, and it is the reason the call wins.

Trick 8: the King cuts in

Opponent 2 leads the 9 of diamonds. You have none left, so you trump with the King of spades and collect 10 points. A void is a trump chance.

Trick 9: the last trick

Your King of clubs leads the final trick and wins 19 points with the bonus. Keep a high card for the end whenever you can.

Nine tricks with spades as trump. You win tricks 8 and 9; your Partner wins tricks 2, 3 and 4; Opponent 1 wins tricks 1, 5 and 6; Opponent 2 wins trick 7.
Every trick in order. A gold outline marks the winner.

Where it's easy to go wrong

Diamonds is the better suit here. It wins 124 to 38, because your Partner holds the Queen, Jack and 10, and you hold the King. You cannot see that, since you have just the 7 in your first six. Hearts wins 92 to 70, and clubs loses 69 to 93.

The takeaway

When you hold the Ace and the King of a suit, you want your Partner to hold the Jack, because the Ace does the most good under it. For how the 162 points are made, read the 162 on the table.
